    Same item on other platforms

    WhereFeesFee %Profit

Same price, shipping and costs on each platform. eBay uses most-category rates without a store; Etsy assumes no Offsite Ads; Grailed assumes a US buyer and Stripe payouts; PayPal is a direct Goods & Services sale. Buyer-side fees are not included.

eBay takes about 13.6% of the total sale plus $0.40 per order for most categories. The total includes shipping and the sales tax the buyer pays, so a $50 item with $8 shipping costs you $8.29 in fees before any promoted listing or international charges. Use the calculator above to see the exact split for your item, then subtract what you paid for it and the postage to get the profit you actually keep.

eBay fees in 2026: the short version

Almost every sale on eBay.com carries two charges. The first is the final value fee, a percentage of the total amount of the sale that depends on the category you list in. The second is the per-order fee: $0.40 when the order total is above $10, and $0.30 when it is $10 or less.

A few extra charges only apply in certain situations: an international fee when you ship abroad on your own, an ad fee when a sale comes through Promoted Listings, a surcharge if your account falls to Below Standard, and insertion fees once you go past your free monthly listings. Each of those is a toggle under More options in the calculator, so you only add what applies to you.

eBay final value fees by category

These are the standard rates for sellers without an eBay Store. In most categories the rate is "tiered": the first $7,500 of the sale is charged at the higher rate and only the part above it gets the lower rate. Handbags, jewelry and bullion work differently. There, the whole sale is charged at one rate, and which rate depends on whether the total is above or below the threshold.

    Worked examples

All three examples use non-store rates and no optional fees. The fee base is the total amount of the sale, which is why the 7% sales tax in the second example adds about a dollar to the fee even though the tax itself goes to the state, not to you.

SaleTotal amount of saleFinal value fee + per orderTotal eBay feesPayout
    $20 item, buyer pays $5 shipping, no tax$25.00$3.40 + $0.40$3.80 (15.2%)$21.20
    $100 item, $10 shipping, 7% sales tax$117.70$16.01 + $0.40$16.41 (14.9%)$93.59
    $250 sneakers, free shipping$250.00$20.00 (8%, no per-order fee)$20.00 (8.0%)$230.00

Now add your costs. If an item cost you $15, the buyer paid $60 plus $8 shipping and the label cost you $9, eBay keeps $9.65 and you are left with $34.35 profit, about a 50% margin on the sale. If you want to clear exactly $20 on that same item, the target mode tells you the lowest price that does it: $43.39.

What counts as the "total amount of the sale"

eBay does not charge only on your item price. The final value fee is calculated on everything the buyer pays: the item price, shipping and handling, and the sales tax eBay collects on the order. Sellers often miss this and underestimate fees by a dollar or two on every sale.

    • Shipping you charge is part of the fee base. Free shipping does not avoid the fee; it simply moves the cost into your item price.
    • Sales tax is collected and sent to the state by eBay, but the fee is still calculated on it. Tax rates vary by the buyer's location, so the calculator lets you enter one.
    • Postage you pay for the label is not a fee. It is your cost, so enter it separately to see true profit.

Other eBay fees that can apply

    International fee: 1.65%

If the buyer's address is outside the US and you ship the item yourself rather than through eBay International Shipping, eBay adds 1.65% of the total amount of the sale.

    Promoted Listings

With Promoted Listings General you choose an ad rate, and you pay that percentage of the sale only when a buyer clicks your promoted listing and buys within the attribution window. Enter your ad rate to see how much it eats into your margin. On thin margins, a 5% ad rate can take a third of your profit.

    Below Standard surcharge

If your seller performance falls to Below Standard, eBay adds 6% to the final value fee percentage. On a $100 sale that is $6 more per order, which is often more than a seller's whole profit.

    Insertion fees and currency conversion

Most sellers get 250 free listings a month; after that, each new listing costs $0.35 in most categories. eBay also charges a currency conversion fee when it converts funds for you. That fee is 3% today and rises to 3.25% on October 14, 2026, according to eBay's fee page.

How to keep more of each sale

    • Price with fees in mind. Use the target profit mode before you list instead of finding out after the sale.
    • Bundle orders. The per-order fee is charged once per order, so a buyer who checks out three items together costs you $0.40, not $1.20.
    • Earn Top Rated Plus. Qualifying listings get 10% off the percentage part of the final value fee.
    • Watch your ad rate. Promoted Listings can sell items faster, but test lower rates first.
    • Consider a store at volume. Store subscribers pay lower final value fees in many categories, which can cover the monthly cost once you sell regularly.

eBay vs. Etsy vs. selling direct

The table under the calculator runs the same item, shipping and costs through eBay, Etsy and a direct PayPal Goods & Services payment. Etsy's fees on a typical sale are lower in percentage terms, but its buyers look for handmade, vintage and craft items. A direct payment has the lowest fee but no marketplace traffic. For the detailed rules, see the Etsy fee calculator and the PayPal fee calculator.

Limits of this calculator: it uses standard US rates for sellers without an eBay Store, and it does not include store subscription discounts, eBay Motors vehicle fees or category-specific promotions. Every rate links back to eBay's own page on How we calculate.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does eBay take from a sale?

For most categories eBay charges a final value fee of 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500, plus 2.35% on any part above $7,500, and a per-order fee of $0.40 ($0.30 if the order total is $10 or less). On a typical sale that works out to roughly 14% to 15% of what the buyer paid.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?

Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, the shipping and handling the buyer pays, and the sales tax eBay collects. That is why entering your buyer's tax rate makes the estimate more accurate.

Is the per-order fee charged per item?

No. It is charged once per order. If one buyer checks out several of your items together with the same shipping method, the $0.30 or $0.40 fee is charged once.

Are eBay fees lower with a store?

Usually, yes. Sellers with a Basic or higher eBay Store pay lower final value fees in many categories. This calculator uses the standard non-store rates, so store sellers will often pay a little less than shown.

How do I price an item to keep a set profit on eBay?

Switch the calculator to Price for a target profit, enter the profit you want plus your item cost and postage, and it finds the lowest listing price that still leaves you that amount after eBay's fees.
